Xbox Games Showcase 2024: New Games and Consoles Unveiled
Microsoft went beyond expectations at this year's Xbox Games Showcase with many new trailers and announcements. So, what did Xbox reveal at the event? Here are the new games and new consoles.
Last month, the closure of four Xbox studios sparked a lot of criticism from fans. However, with yesterday's Xbox Games Showcase, the company managed to make everyone forget about it. Recently, Xbox has delivered notable successes like Halo Infinite, Hellblade 2, and Starfield. Yet, these achievements seemed small compared to the 23 game development studios under Xbox Game Studios. So, what have these studios been working on for the past four years? The Xbox Games Showcase provided the answer.
The event kicked off with Doom: The Dark Ages, the highly anticipated sequel to 2020's Doom Eternal by id Software. The last two Doom games were fast-paced, bloody, and fun. From the trailer, Dark Ages looks to follow the same path.
Of course, Doom isn't the only returning series. Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, the new Fable, State of Decay 3, Age of Mythology: Retold, and a new Gears of War: E-Day, set 14 years before the original Gears of War, are also among the returning series. In addition to these series, there were a few original games not connected to existing franchises. South of Midnight offers a new adventure with building-sized swamp monsters and a talking catfish. Obsidian Entertainment's Avowed also captured attention with its vibrant world.
However, Xbox's recurring problem remains: we don't know when most of these games will be released. Fable has the potential to be the biggest action RPG since Elden Ring, but all we have is a cinematic trailer and a vague 2025 release date. Perfect Dark was first announced in late 2020, and four years later, we still have no idea when it will be playable. South of Midnight appears not to be ready until 2025. Likewise, Doom: The Dark Ages, Expedition 33, or Mixtape don't seem close to being launched.
Besides the games, Microsoft also took the opportunity to unveil three new Xbox Series X/S consoles at the event. Xbox announced the expansion of its hardware portfolio with the 1TB Series S in Robot White, the all-digital Xbox Series X, and the 2TB Xbox Series X Special Edition in Galaxy Black.
In summary, Xbox delivered one of its best events in recent years. New additions to major series, exciting original games, highly anticipated titles from third-party studios, and new hardware for those looking to upgrade their console or transition from Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S. One question remains: how long will we have to wait to play all these games?
