The highly anticipated trailer for the animated series Creature Commandos has been released, marking the debut of the first animated project in the new DC Cinematic Universe. This series is overseen by James Gunn, who is also the co-chair of DC Studios.
Creature Commandos signals a new era for DC Studios and stands out as the first project shaped by James Gunn's creative vision. The series was unveiled as a surprise during the San Diego Comic-Con 2024, exciting DC fans with numerous intriguing details.
Consisting of seven episodes, Creature Commandos is inspired by the comic book of the same name and features characters that have been reimagined with a modern twist. At the heart of the story is Task Force M (Monster), led by Amanda Waller, played by Viola Davis. This team is composed of non-human inmates from Belle Reve prison, formed to undertake missions deemed too dangerous for humans, similar to the Suicide Squad.
Creature Commandos Voice Cast Will Also Appear in Future Live-Action Projects
The trailer introduces several key characters, including Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), Frankenstein (David Harbour), Bride of Frankenstein (Indira Varma), Nina Mazursky (Zoe Chao), G.I. Robot (Sean Gunn), Dr. Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), and Weasel (Sean Gunn). It has also been announced that Steve Agee will reprise his role as Economos, Maria Bakalova will play Princess Ilana, and Anya Chalotra will portray Circe.
James Gunn emphasizes that the series is a crucial building block for the future of the DC Cinematic Universe. It has been confirmed that most of the actors voicing characters in the animated series will also portray their roles in upcoming live-action projects. For example, Frank Grillo is set to play Rick Flag Sr. in the second season of Peacemaker.
Creature Commandos blends classic monster-themed characters from the DC universe with modern additions like Weasel, a character known from Gunn's film The Suicide Squad. This approach aims to bring together both traditional and innovative elements in the new DC Cinematic Universe.
The series is expected to explore the aftermath of the exposure of Amanda Waller’s Task Force X (Suicide Squad) activities, indicating a direct connection to the first season of Peacemaker and showing that the new universe acknowledges certain past events.
Creature Commandos, which marks the beginning of the new DC Cinematic Universe's first phase titled "Gods and Monsters," will be available for streaming on the Max platform in December 2024.
