'Shogun' FX's Samurai Drama Makes a Big Splash with Finale

Shogun series made its final with the 10th episode. FX's historical drama samurai series said goodbye to the screens.

Shogun series ended with the 10th episode. FX's new production in the genres of history, adventure, and drama resonated widely during its broadcast.

Shogun, which has been compared by many viewers to HBO's Game of Thrones due to its political conflicts and historical atmosphere, premiered on February 27, 2024 on the FX channel, which broadcasts under the umbrella of The Walt Disney Company.

The production was presented to audiences digitally worldwide on Hulu. Adapted from the novel first published in 1975 by American fiction writer James Clavell, the series had previously been adapted for NBC in 1980.

Set in feudal Japan, Shogun currently has an average rating of 9/10 on IMDb and a 99% critic and 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite the positive reviews and high ratings, it was previously reported that the production was designed as a miniseries and would conclude its adventure in one season. With the 10th episode, titled 'A Dream of a Dream,' which aired on April 23rd, the production concluded its journey.

Shogun Says Farewell with Episode 10: "A Dream of a Dream"

A Dream of a Dream, the final episode of Shogun, opened on IMDb with a strong 8.8/10 rating. Hiroyuki Sanada, who portrayed the character of Yoshii Toranaga, shared his insights on the episode, delving into Toranaga's final test for Blackthorne, Anjin's discovery of his true samurai spirit, and the lasting impact of Nagakado, Hiromatsu, and Mariko's sacrifices.
"Yes, Toranaga tried to let Blackthorne go before Osaka, and then he came back after Mariko's death. So now he could be a great weapon for Toranaga. But before that, he needed a test. It seems he has finally learned what the samurai spirit means through all the things he has experienced. He also saw himself as an old man in his dream, watching his samurai helmet while growing old in England, and maybe he asked himself, 'Is this the best way to die? Does a long life mean happiness?'"
"Then he saw how Mariko died with an honorable mission and in a meaningful way. So these kinds of things taught him what the samurai spirit is. What is happiness? What is a good death for him? What is the right timing? What is an honorable death for him? So at that moment, the samurai spirit came to his mind."
"He never wastes a life. As Toranaga said at the end of [episode 8] about Nagakado, Hiromatsu, Mariko, 'I will never, ever waste your deaths. Thank you for your loyalty and your sacrifice,' This was for Mariko and everyone else who died with her. So it will never be in vain. This promise is important for Toranaga to maintain his strength and motivation."

Will There Be a "Shogun" Season 2?

There hasn't been an official announcement from the network about a second season of Shogun. However, the show's creators, Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, previously stated that they covered the entire story from the source material in one season.
While the story from the novel is complete with the first season, Blackthorne and other surviving characters from Season 1 have the potential to continue their adventures in feudal Japan.
What could be next for Blackthorne after passing Toranaga's tests and finding his samurai spirit is a question that could be answered in Shogun Season 2. If Blackthorne remains in Japan, he will likely continue to serve Toranaga, promising him that when the day comes to give his life for his lord, his death will not be in vain.
Although the creators of the show argue that they have exhausted the source material, the final say will come from the network.
