Minecraft Creator Notch Hints at Possible Minecraft 2 Development

Markus Persson, better known as Notch to millions of gamers worldwide and the original creator of Minecraft, has stirred excitement in the gaming community with hints about a potential Minecraft successor. His recent statements have left fans wondering: could a new chapter in the Minecraft saga be on the horizon?

From Poll to Possibility

In a surprising move, Persson - who sold Mojang Studios to Microsoft for $2.5 billion in 2014 - conducted an intriguing poll on his social media account. He presented his followers with two options: continue development on his current roguelike project or begin work on what could become Minecraft 2. The results were overwhelming, with 77% of participants voting in favor of a Minecraft successor.

According to Persson, this wasn't just a hypothetical exercise. He confirmed that the poll was genuine and expressed his commitment to pursuing whichever option won. While legal restrictions prevent him from using the exact title "Minecraft 2," he explained that the project could be developed as a spiritual successor to the original game.

The Path from Billion-Dollar Success to Potential Sequel

Minecraft's success story is nothing short of extraordinary, with over 300 million copies sold and a major film adaptation starring Jason Momoa in development. Addressing the possibility of working with Microsoft, Notch expressed openness to collaboration:

"If Microsoft is interested and we can agree on terms, I'm absolutely ready to do it. I'm even willing to offer them a larger share than usual to demonstrate my good faith," Persson stated. He emphasized that any new project would be designed to respect the intellectual property rights of the original Minecraft and the ongoing work of the Mojang team, though he remained cautious about the project's future, noting that "What I'm developing might never see the light of day."

Current State and Future Prospects

Since 2014, Notch's development work has been limited to a two-hour demo using the Unity engine and several small game jam projects. His potential return to large-scale game development has generated significant interest in the gaming industry. Fans are curious to see if Persson can recreate the magic of his 2011 formula.

While Microsoft and Mojang have focused on updating and expanding the existing Minecraft rather than pursuing a direct sequel, Notch's spiritual successor could offer fans the closest experience to a true Minecraft 2 they might get.
