Michael B. Jordan Teases "Sinners" Prequel or Sequel Possibilities
Following the impressive debut of Ryan Coogler's "Sinners," Michael B. Jordan has hinted at the possibility of future installments. The period horror film has resonated with both critics and audiences, earning Jordan and Coogler their highest live-action Rotten Tomatoes scores to date. The movie revolves around twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, portrayed by Jordan, who return to their Mississippi hometown in 1932 hoping for a fresh start. However, their juke joint opening is disrupted by vampires drawn to a musician performing at the club.
During an interview with GamesRadar+, Jordan and Coogler discussed the potential for a prequel exploring the brothers' time in Chicago, or a sequel focusing on Stack's life as a vampire. Jordan expressed his enthusiasm for either option, emphasizing that the decision ultimately rests with Coogler. Coogler jokingly deferred to his wife and producing partner as part of the decision-making process.
Here's what Jordan and Coogler had to say: "I mean, you know, I'm always… I'd be up for it," Jordan stated, adding, "Not saying he wouldn't, but he calls the shots!" Coogler responded with humor, "I call the shots? Zinzi?! I mean, no, for me, my favorite movies are ones where it feels like a world was happening before, and a world is gonna happen after." Jordan added, "Yeah, that you care about the characters, and that you wanna see what happened to 'em? What happened before?"
Jordan & Coogler's Mean For Sinners' Future Coogler has previously expressed reservations about a "Sinners" sequel, stating his desire to create a complete story with the original film. While he hasn't explicitly ruled out a follow-up, he emphasized that he didn't write the movie with the intention of creating a franchise.
However, Jordan's willingness to revisit the "Sinners" universe opens up possibilities. Given their established collaboration, Jordan could potentially lead the project with another director, similar to how Coogler executive produced "Creed II" while Steven Caple Jr. directed. Jordan has also expressed interest in directing more projects, as demonstrated by "Creed III."
Our Take On A Potential Sinners Follow-Up
There are several potential storylines for a prequel. As GamesRadar+ suggested, a prequel could delve into Smoke and Stack's involvement with the Chicago mob. Another option could explore the origins of Remmick, the lead vampire, whose backstory remained largely mysterious in the film. A sequel could chronicle Stack and Mary's experiences as vampires, either in the 60 years between the movie's timelines or in the present day. While these avenues exist, "Sinners" might be best left as a standalone film. While the return of both Coogler and Jordan would increase the chances of matching the film's success, a prequel or sequel risks diminishing the thematic depth of the original.
