McConaughey & 'True Detective' Creator Team Up for New Film

Matthew McConaughey is reportedly set to star in a new Mike Hammer film, reuniting with "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto. This exciting collaboration will bring the iconic private investigator to the big screen, based on the celebrated book series.

McConaughey is in negotiations to lead the feature film at Skydance, adapted from Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins' book series. Pizzolatto penned the screenplay, injecting his signature style into the hard-boiled detective world of Mike Hammer.

Skydance secured the rights to Spillane and Collins' extensive book collection, planning to develop and produce a feature film series. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger from Skydance will produce the film, alongside Guymon Casady, Benjamin Forkner, and Ken F. Levin. Max Allan Collins will serve as executive producer, with Jane Spillane as co-producer. Carin Sage will oversee the project for Skydance.

The Return of the Hard-Boiled Detective in a Mike Hammer Film

The Mike Hammer film draws from a character dating back to 1947, portrayed on screen numerous times. One notable adaptation is Robert Aldrich's "Kiss Me Deadly" (1955), featuring Ralph Meeker as Hammer. Hammer is known for being more violent and brutal than other detectives of his era, such as Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. Will this new adaptation embrace that aspect?

This project appears to be a perfect fit for the "True Detective" creator, Pizzolatto. His experience with gritty narratives and complex characters makes him an ideal choice to bring Mike Hammer to life for a modern audience.

McConaughey and Pizzolatto previously collaborated on the first season of HBO's "True Detective" in 2014. McConaughey, alongside Woody Harrelson, played Rust Cohle, a former detective reflecting on a past serial killer case. His performance earned him an Emmy nomination and marked a high point in his career revival.

Pizzolatto's Other Projects

Pizzolatto, also a novelist, is currently developing several other projects with Skydance. He is in post-production on "Easy's Waltz," a drama he directed starring Al Pacino and Vince Vaughn. He was at one point also attached to adapt "Blade" for Marvel. Will this new Mike Hammer film be the start of more collaborations?

It remains unclear which specific Mike Hammer book, if any, the film will directly adapt. However, the character's long history and numerous adaptations offer a rich source of material for Pizzolatto to draw from.

The collaboration between Matthew McConaughey and Nic Pizzolatto on this Mike Hammer film promises a compelling and gritty addition to the detective genre, bringing a beloved character to a new generation of viewers. The anticipation is high for this exciting project.
