Madame Web Outperforms Lowest-Grossing X-Men Film at the Box Office
Even though "Madame Web" wasn't a critical darling, it still managed to earn more than twice the box office revenue of the lowest-grossing "X-Men" movie from the Fox era. With both the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU) and the Fox "X-Men" universe now concluded, and some characters transitioning into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it's interesting to compare the successes and failures of these franchises. Despite being considered one of the worst-performing Marvel movies, "Madame Web" significantly outperformed a less popular film from the Fox "X-Men" series.
While the "X-Men" movies released by Fox were generally well-received, not every film was a hit. Similarly, the SSU had several releases, most of which received negative reviews. However, many films in both franchises still managed to earn hundreds of millions of dollars. This wasn't the case for every movie though, and while "Madame Web" is near the bottom in terms of box office performance for Marvel films, one movie earned less than half of its total.
Madame Web's Disappointing Performance "Madame Web" faced numerous challenges that contributed to its low box office numbers. While the SSU consistently released films, they were often poorly received. This might have been due to comparisons with the MCU or the absence of Spider-Man, despite the universe being built around the character. Even though the movies were a mixed bag, they still attracted a decent audience who enjoyed their lightheartedness and mindless entertainment value. However, "Madame Web" failed to deliver on this promise.
Despite being marketed as a major superhero team-up movie featuring new Spider-heroes, only one scene showed these characters in costume, and that was just a dream sequence. The movie also didn't show these girls actually gaining their powers, and Madame Web suddenly becomes incredibly powerful without any prior training. This resulted in significant disappointment, and audiences chose not to see it.

However, considering the films' budgets, "Madame Web" had a production budget of approximately $80 million, not including marketing costs, which likely resulted in a significant loss for Sony.
"The New Mutants," on the other hand, had a $67 million production budget, also likely resulting in a loss before marketing expenses. The box office results clearly show that neither film performed well, and both were likely loss-leaders for their respective studios. Fortunately, "The New Mutants" probably didn't have a large marketing budget, which is why many Marvel fans are unaware it even exists. Ultimately, "Madame Web" gained more traction than the final movie in the Fox "X-Men" universe.
The Reasons Behind The New Mutants' Failure As mentioned earlier, Fox's "X-Men" universe was nearing its end when "The New Mutants" was released in 2020. Disney had already acquired Fox, and although they would later connect the universes in films like "Deadpool & Wolverine," "The New Mutants" had been filmed years before. With Disney's acquisition of Fox, the release date was constantly delayed. When the film finally premiered, it was not allowed reshoots to update the years-old storyline. Instead, the movie was released with minimal marketing and left to fend for itself.
The MCU was ready to take control, and while the movie had to be released, it was done in a way that it would largely go unnoticed. "Madame Web," despite its goofiness, had some highlights that made it a fun and funny experience. While the audience was limited, the jokes were enjoyable, and it's good that "Madame Web" received more recognition and a higher box office, as it was arguably better than "The New Mutants."
