Jude Law to Portray Vladimir Putin in New Political Thriller 'The Wizard of the Kremlin'

In a surprising casting announcement, Oscar-nominated actor Jude Law has revealed he will step into the role of Russian President Vladimir Putin in the upcoming political thriller "The Wizard of the Kremlin." The film, helmed by acclaimed French director Olivier Assayas, promises to offer a compelling glimpse into Putin's early years of power.

Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team

The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast alongside Law. Paul Dano, known for his remarkable performance in "There Will Be Blood," takes the lead role as Vadim Baranov, a television producer who plays a crucial role in Putin's rise to power. The cast also includes Academy Award winner Alicia Vikander ("Tomb Raider") and comedy veteran Zach Galifianakis ("The Hangover"), though their specific roles remain undisclosed.

A Challenging Role

Law, who recently appeared in Disney Plus's "Star Wars" series "Skeleton Crew" as Jod Na Nawood, acknowledges the magnitude of portraying such a controversial figure. In a candid interview with Deadline, the 52-year-old actor described the project as daunting. "Right now, this job feels like climbing Mount Everest. I'm at the base, looking up, thinking 'What am I doing?'" Law admitted, adding, "But well, it's up to me to figure it out."

The Story Behind the Film

"The Wizard of the Kremlin" is based on Swiss-Italian author Giuliano da Empoli's 2023 novel "Le Mage du Kremlin." The screenplay is being crafted by director Assayas in collaboration with Emmanuel Carrère. Set in 1990s Russia, the narrative focuses on Vadim Baranov, an artist-turned-TV producer who orchestrates society like a grand reality show, ultimately becoming instrumental in Putin's ascension to power.

Acclaimed Creative Vision

Olivier Assayas, renowned for directing critically acclaimed films such as "Clouds of Sils Maria," "Personal Shopper," and "Carlos," brings his distinctive storytelling approach to this political thriller. The project marks another significant addition to his filmography, which has consistently demonstrated his ability to handle complex political narratives with nuance and depth.

Production Status

The film is currently in its early stages of development. Law, whose previous Oscar nominations came from "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and "Cold Mountain," and who has appeared in major franchises including "Fantastic Beasts" and "Sherlock Holmes," emphasizes that while preparation has begun, the project is still in its initial phases.
