Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz to Star in Marc Webb's 'Day Drinker' Thriller

Hollywood is buzzing with excitement as Johnny Depp prepares for his major studio comeback, teaming up with Penelope Cruz in the upcoming thriller "Day Drinker," helmed by acclaimed director Marc Webb.

Star-Studded Project Gains Momentum

Lionsgate Studios is set to present this highly anticipated project at the American Film Market for international sales. The film marks Depp's most significant step back into mainstream Hollywood following his widely publicized legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard. While Depp has recently appeared in European productions like "Jeanne du Barry" and "Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness," "Day Drinker" represents his return to high-profile commercial filmmaking.

A Gripping New Thriller

The screenplay comes from Zach Dean, known for action-packed hits like "The Tomorrow War" and "Fast X." The story follows a ship's bartender who becomes entangled in the criminal underworld after meeting a mysterious patron. Initially, "Euphoria" star Sydney Sweeney was rumored for the female lead, but the role ultimately went to Cruz.

Reuniting Screen Legends

This project marks the fourth collaboration between Depp and Cruz, following their memorable performances in "Blow," "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," and "Murder on the Orient Express." Director Marc Webb, who made his mark with "(500) Days of Summer" and later helmed "The Amazing Spider-Man" series, will direct the film. Webb is currently finishing post-production on Disney's live-action "Snow White."

Powerhouse Production Team

The film boasts an impressive producing team, including "John Wick" producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee, alongside Adam Kolbrenner, known for "The Tomorrow War" and "Free Guy." Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Adam Fogelson expressed enthusiasm about the project, stating: "'Day Drinker' combines a commercial concept with wild plot twists in an incredible world. We couldn't imagine better talents than Marc to direct and Johnny and Penélope to bring this world to life."

Looking Ahead

This project represents Depp's first major studio film since 2018, offering a promising return to mainstream cinema. Meanwhile, Cruz continues her string of high-profile roles, recently starring in Michael Mann's "Ferrari" alongside Adam Driver and preparing for her appearance in Warner Bros' "The Bride!"
