Is Chris Evans Hiding a Secret Return as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday?
After sharing the screen for five years as Sam Wilson/Falcon and Steve Rogers/Captain America, Anthony Mackie and Chris Evans created one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's most memorable partnerships. Their on-screen friendship reached a pivotal moment in "Avengers: Endgame" (2019) when Steve Rogers passed his iconic shield to Sam Wilson, marking a historic transition in the MCU.
The Shield's New Bearer
This torch-passing moment will fully materialize in Marvel's upcoming "Captain America: Brave New World," where Mackie steps into the spotlight as the new symbol of liberty. However, recent rumors about Evans' potential return to the franchise in "Avengers: Doomsday" (2026) have sparked widespread speculation among fans.
Conflicting Statements
In a revealing interview with Esquire, Mackie shared an intriguing conversation with Evans. "I had no idea! I spoke with Chris a few weeks ago, and there was nothing about this then. I specifically asked him, 'They're saying they're bringing everyone back. Are you coming back?' And he said, 'Oh, I'm happy being retired.'" Mackie later learned about Evans' rumored return through his manager, though he admitted to not having seen any script yet.
Evans' Firm Denial
Evans has categorically denied these comeback rumors, stating, "This isn't true. It happens all the time. Every few years since Endgame—it keeps happening. I've stopped responding to it. I'm happy being retired." This denial draws parallels to Andrew Garfield's repeated refusals about his appearance in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" before his eventual reveal in the film.
The Future of the Franchise
"Avengers: Doomsday" is set to be directed by the Russo Brothers and will feature Robert Downey Jr.'s debut as the villain Doctor Doom. Mackie is expected to lead the charge as the MCU's new Captain America, bringing a fresh perspective to the Avengers lineup.
Mackie's Vision
Speaking about the upcoming blockbuster, Mackie expressed his thoughts: "You don't want 'Infinity War' and 'Endgame 2.0.' The Russos are so smart—they understand this universe, its history, and the comics so well that I'm sure they have something planned. How they'll manage to bring all these people together on screen, I have no idea."
Looking toward his future as Captain America, Mackie envisions a solid decade in the role. "There are two Avengers films coming up, hopefully another Captain America movie, plus random crossovers: Spider-Man! Fantastic Four! But you never know. I definitely don't want to be Captain America at sixty."
Fans can catch Anthony Mackie in his first solo outing as Captain America when "Captain America: Brave New World" releases on February 14th through Disney and Marvel Studios.
