"House of the Dragon" Season 3 Confirmed: HBO Renews Series Before Season 2 Premiere

HBO has announced the renewal of the "Game of Thrones" spin-off series "House of the Dragon" for a third season, just days before the highly anticipated premiere of the second season.

Adapted from G.R.R. Martin's fantasy book "Fire and Blood," the series is set two centuries before the events of "Game of Thrones" and tells the intricate story of House Targaryen, which ruled Westeros during that time.

The second season will focus on the bloody conflict between the Blacks (Rhaenyra, Daemon) and the Greens (Aegon, Hightowers), officially beginning the Targaryen civil war known as the "Dance of the Dragons." Unlike the first season, which consisted of 10 episodes, the second season will have 8 episodes and will progress without major time jumps. Francesca Orsi, HBO's head of programming, stated on Thursday:

"George [R.R. Martin], [showrunner] Ryan [Condal], and our other incredible executive producers, cast, and crew have reached new heights with the extraordinary second season of House of the Dragon.

We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort put forth by the entire team to create a spectacular second season with a scope and scale rivaling only the heart of the show. We couldn’t be more excited to continue the Targaryen story and watch this team shine again in season 3."
