GTA 6: Unexpected Character Shift Promises a Compelling Story

The upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6 has revealed some intriguing details about its story, particularly concerning the portrayal of its main characters. This represents a notable shift in how characters are depicted in the franchise, and while it's not a complete departure from previous games, the differences between GTA 5 and GTA 6 are significant. However, given the history of Grand Theft Auto, it's likely that the game will eventually revert to some familiar patterns.

While the characters in GTA 6 may possess unique qualities for the series, many aspects of the game's world still align with Rockstar's satirical take on the United States. The second trailer, for instance, an in-universe for Phil's Ammu-Nation, a gun store where the owner recklessly fires bullets into the air from the store's sign. Yet, the protagonists, Lucia and Jason, appear to diverge significantly from previous protagonists, suggesting some unexpected moments in GTA.

GTA 6's Surprisingly Wholesome Characters

Sweet Moments Between the Main Couple

What immediately stood out in the second GTA 6 trailer was its grounded feel. This is partly due to the stunning, photo-realistic graphics, but also to the mundane scenes shown in the opening moments. We are introduced to Jason, Lucia's partner in crime, as he repairs his roof and interacts with his neighbors in a casual way.

While the trailer does feature action and hints at criminal activities, it also dedicates a significant portion to surprisingly tender and wholesome moments between Lucia and Jason. One memorable scene shows Lucia returning from community service and collapsing onto Jason on the couch. While the game was known to on a couple, the sweetness of their interactions was unexpected. The trailer also suggests a strong commitment between them. Jason receives attention from other Vice City residents, but he remains coy, showing no signs of infidelity towards Lucia. They are shown partying together and spending time with friends, painting a picture of a healthier couple than seen in previous GTA games, and potentially more likable protagonists.

A Contrast to GTA 5's Cast

The affectionate and somewhat down-to-earth relationship between Lucia and Jason feels particularly striking because it contrasts so sharply with the protagonists of GTA 5. Michael is cynical and perpetually dissatisfied, despite his comfortable life and escape from serious crimes. He may also cheat on his wife, who reciprocates the infidelity. Trevor, on the other hand, embodies pure chaos and seems to revel in his vile actions, as seen in GTA 5's infamous torture scene.

Among GTA 5's cast, Franklin is arguably the most redeemable protagonist. He simply desires a better life and has limited opportunities to achieve it outside of crime. However, Franklin lacks the same wholesome connection with other characters that Lucia and Jason seem to in GTA 6's trailer. Many of Franklin's relationships are contentious, and while he cares for those around him, we rarely witness quiet, grounded moments between them. Of course, only a glimpse of GTA 6's story has been revealed, making it difficult to determine if this trend will continue.

The trailer's ending suggests that Lucia and Jason will face some incredibly chaotic situations, and it remains to be seen how their relationship will endure. Even if their relationship remains strong and wholesome, an unambiguously happy ending for GTA 6 shouldn't be expected.

Don't Expect Lasting Happiness

GTA 6 clearly draws inspiration from Bonnie and Clyde, the notorious American outlaw couple who embarked on a crime spree in the 1930s. Their story ended tragically with an ambush and death at the hands of law enforcement. Given this inspiration, it wouldn't be surprising if Lucia and Jason met a similar fate.

Currently, there's no indication of a third playable character, and it would be somewhat surprising given the promotional material's on the main couple. Considering that GTA games typically allow continued play after the main story, it's likely that at least one of the outlaws will survive. However, the game could easily kill off one of them for a dramatic climax. This wouldn't be entirely unprecedented, as two of GTA 5's three possible endings result in the death of a playable character. Even if both characters survive, they are unlikely to remain as carefree and happy as they appear in the trailer. As the stakes rise, tension will likely emerge between them as they face increasingly desperate situations.

Even though Lucia and Jason are unlikely to remain completely happy throughout GTA 6's full story, it's refreshing to see the game taking time for quieter, more intimate interactions. Connecting with two-thirds of GTA 5's protagonists could be challenging, making potentially more relatable and grounded characters a welcome change. However, this could create dissonance for players who simply want to engage in chaotic behavior if they don't have a character like Trevor to facilitate it.
