Grogu Popcorn Bucket? 'Mandalorian' Creators Debate the Design

The upcoming "The Mandalorian & Grogu" film, slated for release on May 22, 2026, is already generating buzz, not just for its plot, but also for its potential merchandise. Star Wars Celebration recently offered fans a glimpse into what's to come, including a playful debate between writer/director Jon Favreau and Star Wars visionary Dave Filoni about a crucial piece of fan gear: the popcorn bucket.

The discussion arose during an interview with Collider's Maggie Lovitt, where Favreau revealed that the possibility of toys and collectibles influences character design. While no official decision has been made, Favreau acknowledged the importance of merchandise, stating, “When we plan new designs, we think about what's it going to be like as a collectible or as a toy." Favreau hinted at the significance of merchandise in attracting audiences to theaters. He explained that collectibles are “part of what brings people to theaters, which is important.” He also mentioned drawing inspiration from collectibles that didn't feature prominently in the films themselves.

The Grogu Popcorn Bucket Dilemma While options like a Mandalorian helmet or a Darksaber handle were considered, Filoni presented a compelling idea. "It’s got to be Grogu, right?" he suggested. "Sitting there with popcorn in front of him, and the bucket’s the pram.” Given Grogu's popularity, a bucket featuring the adorable character seems like a logical choice.

Favreau jokingly added to the speculation, hinting that Grogu might even be eating popcorn in the movie itself. Filoni playfully cautioned him against revealing spoilers, but Favreau doubled down by saying there might even be a shot of it in the trailer. They even reminisced about the Dune sandworm bucket, which sparked the recent craze for unique popcorn containers.

Grogu's Evolving Role Collider also spoke with Favreau about Grogu's development in the upcoming film. He revealed that Grogu, now back with Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) after his time with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), is evolving into "a family member" and "an apprentice." Grogu has already proven his worth by saving Din's life on multiple occasions. As his connection to the Force deepens, he will undoubtedly play a more significant role in the ongoing conflict against the resurgent Empire and First Order. Fans can catch up on Grogu's adventures by watching the first three seasons of The Mandalorian on Disney+.
