DreamWorks Announces Long-Awaited Return to the Swamp: "Shrek 5" Release Date Revealed
The release date for Shrek 5 has been announced. DreamWorks Animation is gearing up to return to the big screen with a new Shrek adventure after many years.
The Shrek series, produced by DreamWorks Animation, began its cinematic journey in 2001. With a voice cast featuring stars like Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, Eddie Murphy, and Antonio Banderas, the series quickly established itself as a significant name in the animation genre. The series also spawned two spin-off adventures focusing on the character Puss in Boots.
The fourth Shrek film was released in 2010, and the second Puss in Boots story hit screens in 2022. Now, after years of speculation but no official announcement, a release date for Shrek 5 has finally been revealed. DreamWorks Animation announced via their social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that Shrek 5 will premiere on July 1, 2026. The announcement also confirmed that Mike Myers will return as the voice of Shrek, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Cameron Diaz as Princess Fiona. This means that audiences will once again be able to return to the Far Far Away Kingdom in one of the most anticipated sequels in recent years.
Eddie Murphy mentioned in a recent interview that they have been recording for the fifth film for some time. Murphy also revealed that a spin-off project focused entirely on Donkey is in development. This spin-off, which will feature Donkey's wife, Dragon, and their hybrid children, has not yet been given a release date.
Walt Dohrn, who worked as a writer on the second and third Shrek films, will take on the role of director for Shrek 5. Dohrn also served as the story supervisor for the fourth film. The Shrek series has grossed nearly $4 billion worldwide and has seen many of its characters become prominent figures in popular culture.
In the past decade, DreamWorks has focused on franchises such as The Bad Guys, How to Train Your Dragon, and Trolls. Following the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, they have decided to open the doors to the beloved swamp once more.
