DC's WWII Film 'Sgt. Rock' Shelved: What Happened?
The World War II-era DC film, *Sgt. Rock*, is no longer in development at DC Studios. The project, which had generated considerable buzz, was envisioned as a gritty war story set within the DC Universe.
Initially, there was talk of Colin Farrell, known for his role as the Penguin, potentially taking on the lead role. Acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino was also attached to direct, with Justin Kuritzkes, writer of *Challengers* and *Queer*, penning the script.
Project Put on Hold According to *The Hollywood Reporter*, the film, which was in pre-production and slated to film in the UK, has been shelved as part of the upcoming DCU slate. Casting was reportedly underway, with Mike Faist, also from *Challengers*, in discussions for a role. An actress had even been cast as a French resistance fighter. The film would have followed Easy Company, a combat unit, as they battled Nazi forces across Europe. A potential storyline involved Sgt. Rock teaming up with the French resistance fighter to locate the Spear of Destiny before the Nazis could obtain it. In DC lore, the Spear of Destiny is the spear that pierced Christ's side during the crucifixion, possessing supernatural powers.
Reasons for the Cancellation The reasons behind the project's cancellation remain somewhat unclear. One source suggested that the film's need for extensive location shooting presented logistical challenges. Another source cited concerns among executives about Guadagnino's lack of experience with superhero movies, despite his impressive filmography. However, hope remains for the project. One source indicated that the film could be “re-assessed at the end of the year for a possible summer shoot in 2026.” Whether this will happen is yet to be seen.
Project History News of the *Sgt. Rock* project first surfaced in November 2024, with reports suggesting Daniel Craig was initially considered for the lead role. Sgt. Rock, created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, made his comic book debut in 1959. James Gunn's DCU reboot is set to begin with *Superman* in July, followed by *Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow* in 2026, and a cameo from Jason Momoa's Lobo. The DCU's *Clayface* movie is scheduled for September 2026.
