Cult Sci-Fi Classic 'Forbidden Planet' Getting Modern Remake

Warner Bros. has greenlit a remake of the groundbreaking 1956 science fiction film "Forbidden Planet," with acclaimed comic book writer and screenwriter Brian K. Vaughan at the helm. This ambitious project aims to bring the classic tale to a new generation of moviegoers.

A Prestigious Creative Team

Vaughan, known for creating beloved comic series like "Y: The Last Man," "Paper Girls," and "Saga," as well as his work on hit TV shows including "Lost," "Under the Dome," and "Runaways," will write the screenplay for this highly anticipated adaptation. Industry veteran Emma Watts, whose impressive portfolio includes "Avatar," "The Martian," and "Alita: Battle Angel," has signed on to produce the film.

The Original's Lasting Impact

The 1956 "Forbidden Planet," directed by Fred M. Wilcox and written by Cyril Hume, Allen Adler, and Irving Block, stands as one of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's most influential productions. Set in the 23rd century, this loose adaptation of Shakespeare's "The Tempest" follows an expedition team discovering the mysterious survivors of a lost colony and encountering an enigmatic scientist guarding the planet's secrets.

A Long-Awaited Revival

Interestingly, James Cameron, the visionary behind "Titanic," "Avatar," and "The Terminator," had previously expressed interest in remaking the film. However, complicated rights issues prevented the project from moving forward until now. Warner Bros. and Watts successfully cleared these legal hurdles before securing Vaughan, an Eisner and Hugo Award winner, for the project.

The new adaptation has yet to announce its cast or release date.
