'Chicago Fire': Tensions Rise Between Pascal and Herrmann

The latest episode of 'Chicago Fire' has ignited a simmering conflict between Chief Dom Pascal and Captain Christopher Herrmann, thanks to the meddling of Randall "Mouch" McHolland. The tension, initially hinted at in "Post-Mortem," where Pascal suspected Commissioner Boden of favoring Herrmann for his position, escalated in “Permanent Damage.” Mouch's behind-the-back have further fueled the fire, setting the stage for a potential showdown.

Mouch's Shifting Allegiances The episode "Too Close" revealed underlying tensions between Mouch and Pascal even before the devastating loss that shook Firehouse 51. Pascal had previously encouraged Mouch to pursue a lieutenant position at another firehouse, even providing a strong recommendation. Despite interviewing for the role, Mouch made it clear to Pascal that he had no intention of leaving 51, especially with Herrmann preparing for the chief's exam. Pascal countered, suggesting Herrmann wasn't truly interested in becoming chief, a statement Mouch vehemently opposed. Fast forward to "Permanent Damage," and Mouch's desire to attend a training course in Maryland mirrors that of Stella Kidd. However, only Kidd received Pascal's recommendation. Mouch's request was met with a dismissive "I'll think about it," highlighting Pascal's ability to hold a grudge after Mouch rejected the lieutenant position. Mouch's subsequent efforts to impress Pascal and prove his worth led to Pascal eventually supporting his conference application.

The Fallout at Molly's The real trouble began at Molly's, where Mouch spoke negatively about Pascal behind his back to Herrmann. He emphasized that the upcoming chief's test in three weeks would be the key to "their" plan to take over leadership at 51. This two-faced behavior is particularly surprising, considering Mouch's past connection to Pascal. Mouch was the one who delivered the heartbreaking news about Pascal's wife's tragic accident. Given Mouch's own near-loss of his wife, Trudy, it seems insensitive to plot Pascal's removal while he's still grieving. His sudden turn also undermines his earlier efforts to improve his relationship with Pascal, which could have fostered open communication.

An Unintended Collision Course Pascal's suspicion that Boden is pushing him out for Herrmann might be misplaced. However, his assessment of Herrmann's hesitancy about becoming chief is accurate. Herrmann has been gradually prepared for a leadership role but remains uncertain. In "Post-Mortem," Herrmann criticized Pascal's decisions, leading Boden to remind him that judgment is easier when not responsible for the final call. This lesson prompted Herrmann to reconsider his stance. Pascal has even been actively mentoring Herrmann, providing support and guidance, albeit with the belief he's grooming his successor. Mouch's actions have now placed Pascal and Herrmann on a collision course. He's pressuring Herrmann to take the chief's test, fueled by the assumption that Boden has already paved the way for them to lead 51. This creates a volatile situation where Herrmann is being pushed toward a position he may not want, and Pascal is unwilling to relinquish his without a fight. The true test may ultimately be of Mouch and Herrmann's friendship, as the truth comes to light. 'Chicago Fire' returns May 7.
