Britney Spears' Life to Be Adapted into a Film
Preparations for the Britney Spears movie have begun. Universal Pictures, which acquired the rights to the pop star's best-selling memoir The Woman in Me, is gearing up to bring the book to the big screen. The biopic will be directed by Jon M. Chu, known for his work on the film Wicked.
The project will be produced by Marc Platt, renowned for his musical films like La La Land and Wicked. Spears shared her excitement and support for the project on her social media with these words:
"I’m excited! I want to share with my fans that I’m working on a secret project. Marc Platt has always made my favorite films... Stay tuned."
Since its release in October 2023, The Woman in Me has sold 2.5 million copies in the United States, achieving tremendous success. The audiobook version, narrated by Oscar-nominated actress Michelle Williams, became the fastest-selling audiobook in Simon & Schuster's history. It was also the most listened-to audiobook on Spotify in 2023. In her book, Britney Spears recounts her journey from the Mickey Mouse Club days to her rise as a pop star, including her highly publicized conservatorship battle and many personal details. Her relationship with ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake and issues with her family are also among the topics covered.
Universal Pictures has a strong track record with musical biopics. The studio previously produced successful films like Straight Outta Compton and 8 Mile, which performed well at the box office. Now, they aim to continue this success with the story of Britney Spears' life.
How the film's script will be shaped and the extent of Spears' involvement in the project are not yet clear. However, sources indicate that the singer will be involved in the production process. Since the end of her controversial conservatorship in 2021, Spears has stayed away from the music industry, focusing on writing songs for other artists. Universal Pictures hopes this move will bring a fresh perspective to the recent trend of musician biopics. The studio is also working on a biographical film about Snoop Dogg and a project inspired by Prince's music.
