Angel Studios Unveils Animated Film and New Epic at CinemaCon
Angel Studios, known for its crowd-supported film releases, returned to CinemaCon this year to present its slate of movies for 2025. Building on the success of "Sound of Freedom," the studio is leveraging its resources to attract established talent and tackle ambitious new projects. The focus of their presentation centered around films designed to connect with a broad audience and amplify meaningful stories.
Among the highlights was the unveiling of Angel Studios' first animated feature, "The King of Kings." This family-friendly film retells the story of the Gospel through the eyes of Charles Dickens, voiced by Kenneth Branagh, as he narrates the story of Jesus to his child. The impressive voice cast also includes Oscar Isaac as Jesus, Pierce Brosnan as Pontius Pilate, and supporting performances by Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Ben Kingsley, and Roman Griffin Davis. Upcoming Releases Angel Studios is also planning a diverse range of live-action films. These projects aim to capture different genres and appeal to a variety of tastes.
Summer Blockbusters Kicking off the summer season over Memorial Day weekend is "The Last Rodeo," directed by Jon Avnet of "Fried Green Tomatoes" fame. The film stars Neal McDonough as a retired bull rider who makes a risky return to the arena to win money needed for his grandson's life-saving surgery. August will see the release of "Sketch," a family-friendly dark fantasy. Tony Hale stars as a father whose daughter's drawings of monsters come to life after a classmate throws her notebook into a pond.
Fall and Winter Films In October, Angel Studios will release "Truth & Treason," a historical drama similar in theme to "Bonhoeffer." This film tells the story of Helmuth Hübener, a German teenager who was executed by the Nazis for distributing leaflets exposing the lies in Joseph Goebbels' war propaganda. Capping off the year is "Zero A.D.," a Nativity epic directed by Alejandro Monteverde, the director of "Sound of Freedom."
"Zero A.D." - A Nativity Epic "Zero A.D." delves into the darker side of the Nativity story, focusing on King Herod's order to slaughter newborn children following the news of the birth of a child destined to be King of the Jews. The film stars Sam Worthington as a military captain tasked with carrying out the horrific order, alongside Deva Cassel, Ben Mendelsohn, Gael García Bernal, and Jim Caviezel. The studio emphasized the importance of the Angel Guild, its community of over one million members, in shaping the future of entertainment and bringing meaningful stories to the big screen.
